Motivation tips to beat the February blues

You started off the New Year with lofty goals and boundless enthusiasm, but come February you may find your inspiration lacking. February blues are a result of the lull that occurs around this time of year after the festivities of the New Year. From November to January 1st we have a lot to look forward to and abruptly it seems to end. The winter blues not only affect your mood and can hinder your social life, but can impact your productivity at work.

Read below for some tips to beat the seasonal blahs, plus a little discount to help you get back on track:

 

STAY HYDRATED

Hydration is key for numerous bodily processes, and it also helps to make our skin and digestion better. This year, treat yourself to a pretty water bottle, or one that indicates how much water you need to drink by certain times of the day. Stay hydrated to decrease hunger and fluid retention, as well as stave off that hangover if you've really overindulged. Coconut water and good old room temperature water sipped on every 15 minutes is a great way to counteract dehydration and therefore decrease hunger cravings. Drink 1-2 glasses of room temperature water before each meal to decrease hunger and increase hydration, which is often mistaken for hunger.

GROW YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK

This is someone, or people, who you trust and feel comfortable calling on for help and motivation when you feel it is lacking. These people will also help you stand accountable for your actions, which helps with your progress. Make a point to connect with three friends or colleagues you haven’t spoken to in a while.

MAXIMIZE YOUR EXPOSURE TO NATURAL LIGHT

Sure, it’s cold outside, but don’t let below-freezing temperatures cause your productivity and mood to plummet. Even a 10-minute outdoor walk can help raise your mood. Light enters the brain through the eyes and impacts serotonin and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that play a role in boosting mood. In the office, position your desk closer to a window to maximize your exposure to natural light. If you don’t have the option of repositioning your furniture, consider a light therapy box. These devices create artificial light that mimics natural light.

 

START WITH A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

You've probably noticed that if you have an unhealthy breakfast (looking at you, Egg McMuffin), you're more likely to eat unhealthy food for the rest of the day. Starting your day with a healthy brekkie, however, will make you feel more inclined to keep the day going well.
